Hello everybody! As a present to my dear cousin, I decided to make a miniature Hogwarts scene! She and I LOVED the Harry Potter books as kids, and the love still continues as adults. In case you're wondering, I'm a Gryffindor (because I rush into things stupidly), and she is a Ravenclaw... but I think we both have an odd affection for Slytherin.

This was also next to impossible to photograph. I HATE SHOOTING THROUGH GLASS.

The making of a 1:24 scale porch

Okay, so this is my first "step by step". My 1:24 scale porch!

NAKID PORCH.

Only the roof. I haven't fixed this yet, but I will by the time I post the "finished product".

SORT OF SIDING. It was kind of fun. It also totally adds. If I had just painted, it wouldn't look as real... I know because I tried it.

Bricks! OMG! I was going to buy bricks, but then I decided that I was impatient and cheap, and made my own. I don't think they look half bad.

Not quite finished, but almost there!!! :3

However, I DO wish to start writing more again, and as of late, have been making other "art" besides my photography. Thus, this is shall become my "everything else" art blog! I shot these during my visit to the Wild Animal Kingdom. Although I haven't worked on them very much (or at all, in some cases) compared to my B/Ws, some of these are still neat, and I may clean them up in the future.

Special Mention for this image: this is from a roll I took at the Botanical Gardens to "unwind" when I was getting really stressed out about finals and my show. I completely consider this to be the last explicitly "flower" roll I'll ever take, because I found it to be fairly unsuccessful. This is the only image I had any attachment to at all.

I do, in fact, shoot color film on occasion. It just so happens I am incredibly lazy about getting it developed (I've become accustomed to B/W and Digital- both are very quick). Now that I'm back in CA though, it looks like I'm going to have to get all my film developed on the "outside"! (unless I buy some chemicals).

Anyway, I'm going to separate these posts into Holga and Not-Holga, for the sheer sake of organization.

Current Statement:
When I began this project, I admit that I was more driven by the subject matter than an underlying idea. My eventual goal is to become a wildlife photographer (or something to that effect), and I thought a series on wild animals (even at a zoo), would be a solid first step in that direction. I've researched the animals that I was especially interested in (mostly the mammals), and stayed for hours at those exhibits, just like a one would have to do if they were shooting animals in a natural habitat.

As I've continued going to the different zoos week after week, I'm starting to realize that this is nothing like wildlife photography. These animals have a completely different relationship with humans than wild animals do. Some avoid the glass walls, well aware that there are thousands of spectators, most of which look for a few seconds and then move on. Other animals are hams, and love the sounds of an awed crowd as they get closer to them.

I grew up in California with zoos like the San Diego Zoo (and so on), and I don't think I ever considered that zoos can be sad. I'm not even sure what the saddest part is; that we need to capture these animals in order to educate people, the way some behavior is changed in such a setting, or that people look for two seconds and move on (as though they really are a freak show).

I want to build a connection that is genuine and sympathetic. I want the viewer to look at these animals and empathize with them.

4x5 is such... a pain in the butt. I love it, it's gorgeous, it's fun, but it is a PAIN in the butt.

4x5 camera's make you feel like a painter though, seeing your image on the glass plate like that.
